Bitcoin (BTC) major Taproot upgrade could be locked in less than 24 hours as more than the minimum required by miners is signaling support for the soft fork, taproot.watch said.
Bitcoin’s Taproot Upgrade May Be Locked Up This Weekend
According to the website, at 14:24 UTC, the current signal ratio is 98.38%. A minimum of 90% of all miners signaling support for Taproot is required to lock in the soft fork, and there are 290 blocks that remain unmined until the next mining difficulty adjustment.
Out of these 290 blocks, 117 of them must be “green” to reach the 90% threshold, which means Taproot will lock at this current signal rate.
The next difficulty adjustment is estimated to take place in two days, according to BTC.com mining pool, but if the current signal rate is maintained, Taproot will be locked in less than a day.
Bitcoin educator and entrepreneur Andreas M. Antonopoulos says that the much-debated “Speedy Trial” Taproot activation method is “a huge success” and he is optimistic about the fact that it has only taken two out of six eras for miners to coordinate the upgrade.
The “Speedy Trial” is a soft fork implementation that allows miners and mining pools to coordinate network upgrades. They do so by signaling the implementation in their mined blocks. When at least 1,815 blocks out of 2,016 create an era that confirm miner readiness, then fully updated nodes of the network will consider the signaling successful and activate the soft fork.
As a result, Taproot activation will be set in November.
What is Bitcoin’s Taproot Upgrade?
The Taproot upgrade is a major upgrade — the biggest since SegWit in 2017 — as it will expand Bitcoin’s smart contracts and scripting capabilities along with providing better security measures. It can also improve privacy on second-layer solutions like Lightning Network by making channels look like regular Bitcoin transactions if integrated into Lightning implementations.
In the most basic sense, Taproot can be seen as the latest step in Bitcoin’s evolution as the upgrade not only seeks to enhance the overall usability of the network by making transactions cheaper, faster and easier to deploy, but also enables smart contract deployment.
Furthermore, Taproot also offers privacy promises, i.e. it seeks to make all transactions look the same to everyone except the transacting parties.
