An employee of Seoul’s Premier Opera House was found to be mining Ethereum in the basement

Per Hangook Ilbo and YTN, the unnamed employee of the center staff, presumably a civil servant, were suspended for two months. Staff members conducting a routine inspection of the rarely used basement room beneath the center’s Calligraphy Museum discovered two ETH mining rigs, including sophisticated graphics cards, that had been installed. connected to the electrical outlet.

The unnamed miner, in his 30s, testified that he has several mining rigs at home and only needs to put the equipment in question into operation to “store them”. He admitted to bringing the equipment to the site in October 2020 knowing that the area was hard to find. But when the price of cryptocurrencies started to soar in November, he decided to connect them to the hub’s electricity grid, arguing that very few people had ever ventured underneath the building – although he claimed that he She connected the devices to her mobile phone, instead of using the network connection at the center.

He confessed to using a collection of unused center screens as part of his setup.

How will Premier Opera House employees secretly mine Ethereum?

The center concluded that he had been using the rigs for just under 50 days, during which time he had used less than $275 worth of electricity — and mined some $575 worth of tokens. He was ordered to pay back the electricity bill, and his immediate supervisor was also reprimanded for not finding out what their team member had done.

The media quoted a Seoul Arts Center spokesman as saying that the employee had not been turned over to the police as he immediately came forward with a candid confession. The spokesperson concluded:

“We have not brought criminal charges in this case, but we do offer the harshest possible penalties in accordance with our internal regulations.”
