- Arthur Hayes predicts CryptoPunks to outperform Ethereum in the market.
- CryptoPunks emerge as digital status symbols amid economic shifts.
- Ethereum capital flows into NFTs, impacting market dynamics.
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes asserted on July 2, 2025, via X that CryptoPunks NFTs are expected to outperform Ethereum financially during the current cycle.
Hayes’ view suggests a shift in digital asset investment, signaling potential cyclical capital rotation from traditional cryptocurrencies to high-value NFTs amidst rising speculative interest.
Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, recently stated through his official X account that CryptoPunks will outperform Ethereum in USD terms during the ongoing market cycle, acknowledging the shifting dynamics within the NFT and crypto markets.
Hayes refers to CryptoPunks as digital luxury watches, suggesting they are emerging as elite digital trophies. His statements point to reallocations of ETH gains into NFTs, specifically highlighting the potential status-driven demand for these digital assets. He stated, “CryptoPunks…are the digital luxury watches for this cycle. They will outshine Ether as the true digital trophies for the elite.”
The NFT marketplace has reported a notable surge in CryptoPunks activity, with trading volumes reaching $26 million during a single weekend. There has also been a significant increase in sales volumes, emphasizing the collection’s current market interest.
Institutional demand for Ethereum remains robust, as evidenced by over $2.1 billion worth of spot ETH ETF inflows. The current scenario reflects a rotation of capital from traditional crypto holdings to NFTs, influenced by both retail and institutional activities.
Historical precedents in 2021 showed NFTs sometimes surpass Layer 1 tokens like ETH in returns. Hayes’ prediction echoes these past trends, adding to the discussion regarding speculative cycles and capital shifts within the crypto economy.
Potential outcomes include altered liquidity patterns in DeFi, influenced by a shift toward NFTs. Observing previous patterns, NFTs like CryptoPunks may temporarily lead over major tokens, while reinforcing their role as cultural and economic digital artifacts.
