Bitcoin is flashing a historically significant bull-market signal even as price stalls just below $84,000, with BTC trading at $82,648 on October 12, down roughly 0.5% over 24 hours. The setup combines a technical milestone not seen at prior cycle lows with persistent resistance at a level that has already triggered hundreds of millions in forced liquidations.
Bitcoin Flashes a Four-Week Bull-Market Signal
Bitcoin has now closed above its 50-week moving average for four consecutive weeks, a streak analysts historically associate with confirmed bull-cycle resumption. The 50-week average sits near $77,000, meaning BTC is currently trading roughly $5,600 above that trend line. Analyst Ash Crypto flagged the development on X, calling it a definitive bottom signal. The four-week streak mirrors conditions seen at the start of prior Bitcoin bull markets, though the 50-week average itself is still sloping downward, a caveat worth noting before treating the signal as fully confirmed. On-chain data from CryptoQuant’s XWIN Japan note adds further context: exchange BTC reserves remain low and whale holdings are around 3 million BTC, both conditions consistent with reduced sell-side pressure. However, Apparent Demand recovered sharply but stayed below zero, and CryptoQuant says a confirmed bottom requires sustained ETF inflows and stronger U.S. spot buying before the signal can be trusted fully. This aligns with five other Bitcoin indicators that recently turned bullish for the first time since 2025.
Why $84,000 Is the Key Bitcoin Price Hurdle
Bitcoin traded near $87,000 on October 2 before pulling back to around $80,000, then rebounding toward the $83,000-$84,000 range where it has since stalled. An earlier push through $84,000 forced out nearly $83 million in short positions, yet price failed to sustain above that level, a pattern suggesting significant sell-side supply clustered at the figure.
A sustained daily or weekly close above $84,000 would change the near-term narrative materially, opening a path back toward the early-October high. Continued rejection at that level, by contrast, risks a retest of the $80,000 range that already saw a sharp $360 million long liquidation event during a prior breakdown.
Compounding the resistance picture, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $681.10 million in weekly net outflows, the largest outflow week since late June. Institutional demand withdrawing at the same moment BTC struggles with overhead supply weakens the case for an imminent breakout, even as the moving-average signal remains intact. The current dynamic echoes the period covered in earlier reporting on Bitcoin futures liquidations and ETF flows failing to set a price floor.
What Bitcoin Traders Should Watch Next
Bullish Confirmation
A weekly close above $84,000 with improving ETF inflows would materially strengthen the bull-market interpretation. CryptoQuant identifies sustained U.S. spot buying and a recovery in Apparent Demand above zero as the two on-chain conditions needed before calling a definitive bottom. The Fear & Greed Index currently reads 69, classified as Greed, suggesting retail sentiment is already leaning bullish even without those institutional confirmations.
Failed-Breakout Risk
If $84,000 continues to cap price action and ETF outflows persist into next week, the four-week moving-average signal could erode without ever triggering a breakout. The 50-week average is still sloping down, meaning the trend line itself provides a weakening anchor. A drop back below $80,000 would introduce doubt about whether the recent $7,000 three-day correction was the full extent of the pullback. Key levels to monitor: $84,000 resistance above, $80,000 and $77,000 (the 50-week average) as the primary support band below.
