A record $91 million in Bitcoin (783 BTC) was stolen in a social engineering heist on August 19, 2025. Hackers impersonated support agents for a wallet, moving funds to Wasabi Wallet, making them hard to track.

The victim’s identity remains undisclosed but involves a large BTC wallet holder. Investigated by ZachXBT, funds were immediately laundered through Wasabi, circumventing detection. Impersonators posed as official support from a wallet provider and exchange.

The heist made significant waves in the crypto community, spotlighting human-factor vulnerabilities despite enhanced technical defenses. Concerns are rising about secure custody of digital assets, with regulatory bodies pushing institutional-grade solutions.

Financial markets showed no significant reactions, as Bitcoin transactions were unaffected beyond the theft. However, the event emphasizes increasing use of privacy tools like Wasabi Wallet, complicating tracking and recovery efforts.

Notably, the ongoing rise in crypto thefts intensifies scrutiny over digital asset security frameworks. The lack of major exchange outflows or impact on other cryptocurrencies suggests isolated incident characteristics.

Past thefts, such as the 2024 Genesis breach, highlight a continuing $3.1 billion trend in crypto losses through phishing scams. Industry experts advocate for enhanced key management procedures and robust authentication, aiming to mitigate future breaches.

Another major social engineering theft: 783 BTC compromised after victim interacted with an impostor exchange/hardware wallet support. Funds immediately mixed through Wasabi. Stay alert.
