Bitcoin’s price plummeted below $118K, leading to the liquidation of $1.89 billion in long positions. This event marked one of the largest long squeezes in recent memory, dramatically altering the derivatives market landscape.

Prominent exchanges like Binance saw a sharp decline in open interest and a shift in market sentiment. Short sellers gained dominance, prompting bearish outlooks among analysts and traders across the crypto industry.

The mass liquidations severely impacted traders and exchanges, with Ethereum also experiencing $180 million in forced liquidations as its price dipped. As a result, sentiment became increasingly bearish across cryptocurrencies.

Analysts observed a rapid unwinding of aggressive long positions, paving the way for short sellers to capitalize. Funding rates for both Bitcoin and Ethereum turned negative, encouraging further short activity. According to Anthony Pompliano, CEO, ProCap Financial, “Swift change in sentiment, from aggressive bullishness near recent highs to a more defensive, risk-off stance.”

Market analysts predict potential increased volatility as traders reassess positions. Wallet data indicated a slight uptick in retail Bitcoin accumulation despite the downturn, suggesting resilience among smaller investors.

Previous instances of long squeezes have resulted in temporary local price bottoms. However, continued bearish sentiment could extend the downturn. Observers highlight historical patterns where such events eventually lead to renewed buying opportunities.
