Vitalik Buterin’s Vision for Low-risk DeFi on Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, declared on September 21, 2025, that “low-risk DeFi” could become Ethereum’s foundational application, mirroring Google’s defining search business.

This approach could offer Ethereum a stable revenue, impacting the DeFi market dynamics with increased focus on sustainable financial applications over speculative investments.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has proposed a strategic shift towards “low-risk DeFi” applications as central to Ethereum’s ecosystem. This approach is akin to how search has sustained Google’s broader operations over time.

Buterin emphasized the comparison with Google, suggesting that stable DeFi applications, namely payments and lending, could become Ethereum’s cornerstone. His critique focuses on high-volatility markets, promoting a shift to sustainable DeFi models.

Vitalik Buterin, Co-founder, Ethereum, “Low-risk DeFi can be for Ethereum what search was for Google: a source of steady and reliable revenue that sustains a broad ecosystem and funds further innovation.”

The proposal has implications for Ethereum’s market dynamics, with Total Value Locked (TVL) in DeFi surpassing $115 billion. This highlights a recovery from a previous bear market period between 2022 and 2023.

Financial adjustments show robust focus on lending platforms such as Aave and Compound, which collectively manage over $90 billion. Yields in blue-chip stablecoins remain attractive within the 5-7% range, providing stability.

Investors and developers suggest a decline in speculative meme coins, moving towards more value-aligned applications. Ethereum’s community forums reflect discussions on advancing reliable DeFi products over high-yield alternatives.

Outcomes from these shifts could significantly alter the DeFi landscape by enhancing security and appeal to institutional investors. Historical analysis indicates that similar focus shifts can lead to long-term ecosystem stability.
