Crypto Investor Charged in Alleged $20 Million Fraud Involving Eight Companies

A South Dakota crypto investor has been charged in an alleged $20 million fraud that prosecutors say ran through eight companies, according to a newly announced federal indictment. The case, brought in the District of South Dakota, remains a set of allegations that have not been proven in court.

What the Charge Alleges

Federal prosecutors say a grand jury indicted Sioux Falls resident Benjamin Paul Wiener, 43, on charges of wire fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced on July 16, 2026. The indictment covers 29 counts. Prosecutors say the alleged scheme harmed dozens of victims in South Dakota and Minnesota and caused roughly $20 million in losses. For related coverage, see Top Crypto News Jul 20: Bitcoin ETF Inflows Return.

Alleged Investor Losses
approximately $20 million
The DOJ says the indictment alleges roughly $20 million in losses tied to the investment scheme.

Wiener pleaded not guilty on July 10, 2026, and was released on bond pending a trial set for September 15, 2026. The charges carry significant exposure, with bank fraud punishable by up to 30 years and aggravated identity theft carrying a mandatory consecutive two-year term. The indictment separately alleges that Wiener obtained a $1,000,000 line of credit in April 2025 by falsifying documents and using another person’s identifying information without authorization.

Alleged Credit Line
$1,000,000
The DOJ says the bank-fraud allegations include a claimed $1 million credit line obtained in April 2025.

How Eight Companies Fit Into the Alleged Scheme

Prosecutors named eight entities they allege were used in the scheme: Benaiah Capital LLC, Benaiah Holdings, Inc., Benaiah Digital Fixed Income LP, Benaiah Digital LP, Benaiah Management Company, Inc., Benaiah Enterprises, LLC, Aslan Management, LLC, and Runway Four10.

The web of related entities is central to the government’s narrative. Reporting on the case describes how new investor cash allegedly kept the scheme alive, a structure prosecutors say allowed funds to move between the companies.

Multiple overlapping entities can complicate how investors trace where their money actually went, which is why the eight-company detail sits at the heart of the allegation rather than being incidental to it. Prosecutors tie the structure back to the same fraud accusation, not to separate ventures.

Why the Case Matters for Crypto News Readers

The indictment lands amid a wider federal push against digital-asset fraud. Reported U.S. losses from cryptocurrency investment fraud rose 24% in 2025 to over $7.2 billion, according to the FBI’s IC3 annual report cited in a DOJ strike-force release.

Cases of this scale reinforce the value of due diligence, particularly when an operation is spread across multiple affiliated companies. Similar scrutiny has followed other enforcement actions, from SEC charges against Unicoin executives to on-chain investigations such as ZachXBT’s work linking a theft network.

For affected investors, resolution can be slow. The Justice Department has at times returned funds to victims long after the fact, as it did when it moved to compensate BitConnect victims. Wiener’s trial is scheduled to begin in September, and the charges remain unproven pending that proceeding.
