Federal Reserve bank reserves dropped $88.236 billion between the September 23 and September 30 Wednesday snapshots, even as the weekly average for the same period moved higher, according to the Fed’s H.4.1 statistical release.
Two Dates, One Headline Number
The $88.236 billion decline is a point-in-time comparison: the reserve balance recorded on the Wednesday close of September 30 versus the Wednesday close of September 23. The Federal Reserve’s H.4.1 release publishes these Wednesday snapshots weekly, making them the most widely tracked short-interval measure of reserve conditions.
Wednesday readings capture a single day’s end-of-day position. They are sensitive to timing effects such as quarter-end settlement flows, Treasury General Account movements, and overnight repo activity, any of which can compress or inflate a single data point without reflecting a sustained directional shift.
Why the Weekly Average Can Point the Other Way
The weekly average aggregates daily reserve balances across all business days in the reporting period, not just Wednesdays. When earlier days in the week carried higher balances, the average can finish above the prior week’s average even if the final Wednesday reading fell sharply. That is the apparent dynamic here: the Wednesday snapshot dropped $88.236 billion, while the broader weekly average rose.
The two figures measure different things and neither invalidates the other. A single-day decline does not confirm a trend; a rising average does not confirm stability if end-of-period readings are sliding. CryptoSlate noted the same measurement distinction when examining why the reserve drop alone does not prove a downstream liquidity squeeze.
What to Watch in the Next Release
The next H.4.1 report will show whether the October 7 Wednesday snapshot extends the decline seen on September 30 or reverses it. Per Federal Reserve statistical data, sustained multi-week moves in the Wednesday series carry more interpretive weight than any single reading.
Separately, watch whether the weekly average continues its upward path or converges toward the lower Wednesday level. Divergence between the two measures widening further would signal intra-week volatility rather than a clean directional trend in reserve supply.
