The ranks of Latin American politicians joining the movement in favor of bitcoin (BTC) adoption with the laser eye movement are beginning to grow rapidly.

The laser eye movement began in earnest over the weekend, when El Salvador President Nayib Bukele expressed support for Bitcoin, others in the region quickly followed. Bukele’s regime has pushed ahead with a landmark bill that would treat BTC passed as the country’s legal tender — along with the USD — to be enacted in 90 days.
However, as previously reported, a small but growing number of parliamentarians in other countries, such as Paraguay, Argentina, Panama and Brazil, also support the implementation of similar measures in their country.
Even Ecuador’s Vice Minister for the Integral Economy Julio Eduardo Clavijo is a junior minister who, like everyone else, has been busy rewriting messages of support from BTC enthusiasts in the region.
The excitement has also spread to Mexico, where longtime tech and blockchain advocate and Neovo Leon senator Indira Kempis has also added a red laser eye to her profile picture. Kempis – like most of the rest of the group – is in her thirties and is a member of a smaller opposition party: the Citizens Movement (nine out of 128 seats in the Senate and 28 out of 500 in the lower house). institute).
However, Kempis is not the only Mexican senator to join the club – Eduardo Murat Hinojosa, a member of the Mexican Green Party (Partido Verde Ecologista de México) has also voiced his support, with an eye shared on Twitter, promising a private member’s bill a series of pro-crypto tweets. Did the laser eye movement develop after the events of El Salvador?
Some suggest that this laser eye trend can be traced back to the business world. Ricardo Salinas Pliego, a powerful Mexican billionaire with ties to the government, last year went public with news about buying bitcoin and advice on BTC investing.
This shows that on June 1, before the El Salvador story happened, Salinas Pliego added the hashtag #bitcoin to his Twitter profile and edited his profile to add a laser eye. This image was later reposted by several congressmen, including Carlos Rejala, the Paraguayan congressman who vowed to launch a private member’s bill on BTC adoption. Rejala calls Salinas Pliego a “master” – a suggestion perhaps that the business guru may have ignited the trend in Latin America.
Many Salvadoran politicians – particularly MPs from Bukele’s ruling Nuevas Ideas party – have also made it clear that they are Bitcoin-friendly. Notable people include the likes of Monica Taher, the government’s head of International Economics and Technology – whose Twitter feed is now full of direct appeals to members. BTC community as the country tries to attract international entrepreneurs.
Either way, it was the legal tender of Bitcoin in El Salvador that became the catalyst for other countries.
