What is Gamefi?
GameFi are video game projects with financial elements, which can be seen as a combination between Games + DeFi (Decentralized Finance). Therefore, games will often pay out in tokens, which you can then sell for a profit. The term GameFi was first used by Andre Cronje – Founder of Yearn Finance.
GameFi is not just Play to Earnbut those are projects that Gamify looks good, one of the examples is Stepn (Move to Earn).
In a way, these games are also a regular DeFi project, because they operate under a real economic mechanism through the components that we will talk about below.
Composition of GameFi projects
The projects in GameFi are diverse, but in general revolve around the following factors:
NFT
The characters in the game are usually NFTs, these NFTs can be main or secondary characters. In Cyball, for example, the players are NFTs; but in Mines of Dalarniathe player plays the role of miners, then the NFTs are parrots, accompanying monkeys.
NFTs will usually be offered for sale as a fundraising round. This way of opening sale is similar to selling tokens, but the difference is that there is no need for any requirements (Staking, owning something mandatory, …), but anyone can participate in buying NFT.
Tokens
Most current games have two tokens:
- Administration tokens: This is the main token of the game. Similar to regular projects, this token will help the community to govern the game. Limited quantity.
- Bonus Tokens: This is a token that rewards users for participating in activities, with the role of using it to use in-game functions. Quantities are usually unlimited.
GameFi’s mechanism of action
GameFi is how the project will combine many mechanisms to create a balance for the tokens in the game, as well as the mechanisms to earn rewards.
Talking about designing a sustainable economy, projects will often reward users through interacting with each other (PvP), or with bots (PvE), doing daily tasks (login attendance, complete the request from the system,…).
Along with that are the mechanisms to consume these tokens, including Breeding (spawning of new characters), token withdrawal fees, etc.
Finally about the NFTs. Usually, these NFTs are the key to play the game (to play Cyball or Axie Infinity, you need 3 NFTs). In addition, the NFT also has a balancing mechanism through burning, if Breeding generates too much NFT.

Key elements in Gamefi project programming
- Landing page: The homepage introduces the project such as information, Tokenomics, Team, Roadmap, About us, Features, Project introduction video, ….
- GamePlay: Is a game graphical interface on website, iOS, Android, … connected to blockchain wallets such as Metamask, Binance Smart Chain, Trust Wallet, Wallet Connect,,…. allows players to interact directly with characters, other players, ….
- Market Place: It is simply a sales page, let’s call it an e-commerce site that sells NFT items and characters of the Gamefi project.
- Tokens: As a Smart Contract token of the project, this is the key element of the gamefi blockchain project. Gamefi project will use this token to raise capital or deploy Airdrop/Bounty campaigns, etc. Tokens will be distributed according to the project’s tokenomics. In addition, the project’s Smart Contract has mint and burn functions for convenience in burning and releasing more in the future.
In addition, additional factors revolve around a gamefi project such as Swap, Exchange, Farm, Pool, Staking, … to supplement and create liquidity/profit flow for investors.
