Tether has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Bank of Kazakhstan to explore developing a stablecoin pegged to the Kazakhstani tenge, according to CryptoPotato. The agreement marks a formal step toward a state-currency-backed digital asset in Central Asia, though no launch date or product terms have been announced.
An Exploratory Agreement, Not a Launch
The MoU pairs the world’s largest stablecoin issuer with Kazakhstan’s central monetary authority to study the feasibility of a tenge-denominated stablecoin. An MoU is a non-binding framework, meaning the parties have agreed to investigate the concept together rather than committed to issuing a token. Design, technical backing, compliance structure, and any deployment timeline remain to be determined through the joint exploration. Tether has been expanding its institutional reach well beyond its flagship USDT product. The Kazakhstan initiative follows a pattern of engaging directly with sovereign-level counterparts, as also seen in the company’s $400 million private-credit fund with Fasanara and the CEO’s confirmed 70% stake in Adecoagro.
What a Tenge Stablecoin Could Mean
A stablecoin tied to the tenge would give Kazakhstan a programmable digital representation of its national currency, potentially enabling faster domestic payments, cross-border settlement, and tokenized financial activity. The involvement of the National Bank of Kazakhstan signals that any resulting product would sit within the country’s regulated financial infrastructure rather than operate as an independent crypto asset.
Tether’s compliance posture elsewhere adds context here: the company has demonstrated willingness to act on official requests, as when it froze $550 million in Iran-linked USDT amid a U.S. crackdown. Regulators in other markets have taken parallel exploratory steps, including Thailand’s SEC proposing rules around stablecoin wallet transfers.
What to Watch
The next concrete signal will be whether both parties advance from an MoU to a formal pilot or proof-of-concept announcement. Official updates are expected through the National Bank’s public communications and Tether’s news channel. Until a pilot is confirmed, the tenge stablecoin remains an exploratory initiative, not an imminent product.
